If you are in the process of moving, you have probably figured out that
they only real moving experts are those people who have moved enough to decide
never to move again.
This article, however, can give you some helpful tips about moving. While you
are most likely already aware of all the basics of planning, packing, moving,
and unpacking, we remind you of some important tasks that are often forgotten by
frazzled movers.
Utilities
It is important to contact the local utilities for your new home or
apartment to have the water, gas, electric, phone, and cable turned on. This
will usually require calling several different companies and setting up
accounts. Ask your realtor or apartment manager if they have a list of contacts
to make this job simpler.
Mailing Address
You will need to complete a change of address form and submit it to the postal
service if you want your mail forwarded to your new address. You want to handle
this task relatively early in the moving process as it can take seven to ten
days for your request to go into effect. You can either complete the form online
at USPS.com or pick up a form at your local post office.
School
Of course this is only relevant for those people who have children enrolled in
school. Be sure you have determined which school your child will attend, and all
the details regarding registration and transportation. Many moving services web
sites offer detailed school information for a wide variety of towns.
Subscriptions, Bills, & Banks
The change of address you have submitted to the postal service is temporary, and
will delay the receipt of your mail. You will need to contact all the people who
regularly send you mail and give them your new address. This is especially
important for your bills and banking records as many of them are time sensitive.
Vehicle Registration
Be sure to find out the vehicle registration regulations for your new state if
you are moving across state lines. Each state has a Department of Motor
Vehicles, and you can find helpful information on their web sites or by giving
them a call.
Voter Registration
You will not need to change your registration information if you will still
reside within your voting precinct. You will need to re-register if you are
changing state or counties. You should be able to find voter registration for
your new area by doing a quick search on the internet.
The most successful moves are the ones that are the least stressful. Planning
ahead and making sure you have completed all the necessary tasks in a timely
manner can take much of the hassle out of moving. |
