While children will often find moving incredibly stressful, it can be even more stressful on pets that will not be made to understand what is happening to their happy home. Pets can be frightened and intimidated in a home full of boxes, strangers, and lots of noise.

Prior to moving be sure to take the following steps:

1. Have your pets vet confirm that your pet will be able to withstand the stress of a move. See if you will need to take any preventative measures such as additional vaccinations.

2. Have the pet’s registration and health records together so that they can be given to your new vet.

3. Have all your pet supplies packed in one box that will be easy for you to find.

4. Place any items your pet will need during transport in an easy find location.

5. Contact your new city and find out what regulations they have regarding pets. Ask if you need to register your pet, and if you are in an apartment determine if your new apartment complex will accept your pet and if they require any additional rent or deposit.

6. Find a new vet in your new home town. A good idea is to ask your current vet for recommendations.

7. If your new home is not far from your current home, thing about transporting your kids and pets in the car. If driving is not an option, ask your airline about the regulations for flying pets.

8. When the movers are there be sure to have your pet in a crate with some of their favorite toys or right by your side. If you do decide to keep you pet in a crate be sure to give them plenty of water, bathroom breaks, and play time.

9. Check to see if your hotel will allow your pet to stay in the room with you if you need to stay in a hotel overnight during your move.

10. When traveling with dogs be sure to take with you water, food, toys, medical files, sponge, plastic bags, crate, cage, leash, and paper towels. When transporting a fish you can purchase a special container from most pet stores.

11.Be sure to give your pet an updated ID tag with a microchip containing your new contact information.

12. Those who are uncomfortable or unable to transport their pet may want to hire a professional pet transport service.
